Providing a national system for training and apprenticeships
Members should contact the College Office at NCC on 0300-456-7465 to ensure new entrants are correctly assessed and entered on the ConstructionSkills system. This arrangement has been agreed between NCC and the Training Group. It is not then necessary to go through the ConstructionSkills Loughborough Office as well.
The age limit for apprentices for New Entrant Training Courses is 16-24 years.
Climb tests are carried out when a trainee goes to the National Construction College for interview. The trainee is expected to climb a set of steeplejack ladders (the trainees are attached to a safety line at all times) where one of the instructors will be waiting at the top and a instructor is on the ground to offer assistance.
Once the trainee has reached the instructor the instructor will remove the top ladder and pass it to the trainee, who then puts it on his shoulder. The trainee then passes the ladder back to the instructor who then refixes the ladder. This normally identifies the apprentices who want to become steeplejacks.
To organise a climb test please contact either Dave Gaughran or Chris Stevenson at the Access Department, National Construction College, Bircham Newton, Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Telephone: 0300-456-7716.
For up-to-date news and information on the Construction Skills Certification Scheme please visit the CSCS website.
A photo ID CSCS smartcard is a direct but simple and very effective way to check if a lightning conductor engineer or steeplejack has completed training and gained experience via an approved training provider and been awarded a recognised qualification (NVQ 2 or 3 Lightning Conductor Engineer/NVQ2 or 3 Steeplejack).
If they cannot produce the card at source, stop them working until they or the company they work for, can provide proof of competence to your satisfaction.
CSCS Health and Safety Tests
Please ensure that when your operatives are taking the health and safety test in order to apply for or renew their CSCS cards they MUST take the HEALTH AND SAFETY WORKING AT HEIGHT TEST.
Below is a link to a HSE Questions and Answers Brief you may find useful regarding the new regulations on working at height.
